Werner Hacke M.D., Ph.D. D.Sc. (hon. mult.) MA (Psychology) FAHA FESC FWSC, is a board certified Neurologist, Psychiatrist and Critical Care Specialist. He was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, Germany, for 27 years from October 1987 until September 2014 and is now Senior Professor of Neurology.
His main scientific and clinical interest is in stroke and critical care neurology. He has pioneered the field of thrombolysis for acute stroke and initiated several new management options for large infarctions including hypothermia and decompressive surgery. He is also a specialist in stroke prevention. He was the principal investigator of several guideline changing studies. He is the Editor and main Author of the leading German language Neurology textbook which is in its 14th edition.
He was the Founding President of the European Stroke Organization (ESO), was First Vice President of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) and the President of the World Stroke Organization (WSO) from 2016-2018.
Prof. Hacke is honorary member of several national and international societies including the American Neurological Association (ANA), the French Neurological Society (SFN) and the Russian Neurological Society, the German Neurological Society and both the German societies of Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology.
He holds honorary doctorates from the Georgia State University, Georgia, and the University of Debrecen, Hungary.
Prof. Hacke has published more than 600 original articles listed in the Clarivate Web of Science. His h-index is 143 (Google Scholar). With close to 130,000 citations he is among the Neurologists with the highest number of publications and citations worldwide. He is the Editor and main Author of the leading German language Neurology textbook which is in its 14th edition.
Wolf-Rüdiger Schäbitz, M.D., is a board certified Neurologist, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel und University of Bielefeld. His academic career included positions at the Departments of Neurology, Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, University of Münster, and the experimental stroke lab at the Neurology Department of the University of Massachusetts. His main scientific and clinical interest includes stroke recovery and brain protection research as well es heart and brain related topics.
Prof. Schäbitz has an established experience in journal editorial activities. He founded the BMC Journal Experimental and Translational Stroke Medicine and thereafter hold a 10 year tenure as senior editor of the AHA journal STROKE. Prof. Schäbitz is member of several national and international societies including the German Neurological Society and the European Stroke Organisation.
